Dr. Saurabh Misra is practicing Consultant Gastro-intestinal, Minimal Access( Laparoscopic surgery), metabolic and Bariatric surgeon at Apollo Hospitals in Bangalore since January 2007. He represents South India on the executive council of the Hernia society of India. He is presently serving as the faculty for HSI( Hernia society of India ), APHS ( Asia Pacific hernia society ) and the AWR ( Abdominal wall repair) which is the international group dedicated to surgery of complex hernia repair and abdominal wall reconstruction.

He also serves as a faculty for the OSSI( Obesity society of India ). 

He completed his MBBS from JLN Medical College, Ajmer before undergoing Masters in surgery from Rabindra Nath Tagore Medical College at Udaipur, Rajasthan. He later underwent Advanced Laparoscopic training from the prestigious Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.

He did his Bariatric surgery training from Mayo Clinic, at Rochester in Minnesota, USA, under Dr Jeff Thompson (Chairman, Surgery ) in 2005.

He was the Consultant and Head of the General and Minimal Access surgery Department at Apollo Hospitals, Goa and was the first surgeon to perform Obesity and other advanced laparoscopic surgeries in the state. He also served as Assistant Professor in Mahatma Gandhi National Institute of Medical Sciences at Jaipur and established the Minimal Access Department before joining the Global hospital and research centre (an institution run by the “Brahmakumaries”) at Mount Abu as consultant and head, for a brief period.

For the last 20 years, he is practicing as a Minimal Access surgeon and has over 8000 independent laparoscopic surgeries to his credit which includes routine surgeries like laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic appendectomies and laparoscopic hernia surgeries with expertise in advanced hernia care including other advanced surgeries like laparoscopic weight loss procedures( Bariatric surgeries), laparoscopic spleen, adrenal, biliary, pancreatic and anti-reflux surgeries.

Since 2016, he is pioneering a technique known as ( laparoscopic) e TEP Rives Stoppa repair for Ventral hernia and has the highest number of such surgeries to his credit in India . This minimal access technique for hernia repair not only reduces the pain and expenses, it also repairs the abdominal wall, thereby strengthening the muscles of the abdomen and reducing back pain and ugly bulge of the abdomen which usually appears after the pregnancy .

Dr Saurabh Misra has presented the papers regarding the above surgery  at Tokyo, Japan in 2016, at New Delhi , 2017 and Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 2017.

He was the first surgeon in India to conduct a live workshop of the above surgery at KIMS hospital, Bangalore, in 2016.

He developed a new form of Laparoscopic surgery known as ‘SMILS ‘ ( Single site Multi Incision Laparoscopic Surgery ), the paper in this regard was published in Journal of Minimal Access surgery in 2013. Further research in this field is under way.

He has many papers in National and international Journals and conferences, the latest being: “Laparoscopic Right Adrenalectomy for Conns Syndrome” (the paper selected for “Vidyaranya best Video paper Award”) at the South Zone ASI conference held at Bangalore FEB 2009.

In 2010, he was invited for the round table hernia congress at Shanghai, China. ( only 5 surgeons were invited from India)

Awarded Hon Fellowship for Asia Pacific Hernia Society.

In 2011, appointed teaching faculty with Ethicon Surgery Training Institute as a consultant by Johnson and Johnson, USA.

In 2014 , he was invited for a Guest Lecture on Metabolic surgery at Hubli , organised by Karnataka Medical Association .

In 2015 , he was appointed as Proctor for teaching laparoscopic and Hernia surgery to upcoming surgeons by Medtronic, USA.

In 2015 he was also elected as the Member EC , representing south zone for HSI (  Hernia society of India )

He conducted the PACE programme with Medtronic USA for young upcoming surgeons in Mumbai and at Bangalore in 2015.

He was invited as a faculty for the Asia pacific hernia society  in 2017 held at Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

He served as a faculty in the AWR group at Kolkatta and IAGES , Bubaneshwer, in 2019.

Research and publications:

  • He is the Fellow of International College of surgeons.
  • He was honored Fellow of Indian association of Gastrointestinal Endo surgeons without an exam.
  • He has more than 25 research papers presented at the national and international Conferences. His paper on “laparoscopic Adrenalectomy for Conn’s syndrome” was awarded at the ASI conference in Bangalore.
  • He also has four papers in indexed Journals to his credit on Minimally Access Surgery.
  • He is a life member to Asia Pacific Hernia Congress.
